Hager surge protectors (SPD) in Malaysia: the SPL range, 1P+N vs 3P+N, cartridges and prices

A surge protective device (SPD), or surge arrester, sits in the distribution board and diverts brief voltage spikes, such as those from nearby lightning arriving through the power cable, to earth. Hager’s modular SPD line on its Malaysian catalogue is the plug-in SPL range, with replaceable cartridges.

What Hager Malaysia lists

As of 8 October 2026, Hager Malaysia’s SPD category has 17 products, and its product index has four more SPD pages outside the category. The table above lists all 21:

  • Type 2, single-phase: SPL220 (20kA), SPL240R (40kA, remote contact), SPL265 and SPL265R (65kA).
  • Type 2, three-phase: SPL420 (20kA), SPL440R (40kA, remote contact), SPL465 and SPL465R (65kA).
  • Type 1+2: SPL212R (single-phase) and SPL412R (three-phase), with a lightning impulse current (Iimp) of 12.5kA; and the SPA180N neutral-to-earth module of the SPA180 combined arrester.
  • Replacement cartridges: phase SPL020 and SPL040; neutral SPL040N and SPL065N.
  • Photovoltaic: SPV340, a DC SPD for solar panel strings, and its SPV040 cartridge. Both pages show “End of life mode”, and neither is for the house’s AC board.

Off the category, Hager Malaysia marks SPL220R, SPL420R and the SPA180 combined arrester as “Spare part: check availability with your electrical wholesaler”, and the SPL065 65kA phase cartridge as “Obsolete”. A product page isn’t a current offer, but distributors may still hold stock.

40kA only with a remote contact. Hager Malaysia’s 40kA models are SPL240R and SPL440R, which add a contact for an alarm when a cartridge needs replacing. The plain SPL240 and SPL440 appear in Hager Malaysia’s 2022 SPD brochure, which is linked from each product page, and Malaysian sellers list them, but Hager Malaysia has no product page for either.

“2P” means single-phase 1P+N here

Hager’s product pages call the single-phase models 2P (SPL2xx) and the three-phase ones 4P (SPL4xx). Hager Malaysia’s own brochure lists the same codes as “Single Phase (1P+N)” and “Three Phase (3P+N)”. The 2P unit takes one phase (L–N) cartridge and one neutral (N–PE) cartridge, and the 4P unit takes three phase cartridges and one neutral cartridge. So for a normal single-phase house you want an SPL2xx, and for a three-phase house an SPL4xx. Sellers use “2P” and “4P” too.

What the numbers mean

From Hager Malaysia’s product pages and datasheets:

ModelImaxInUp (live–neutral)
SPL220 / SPL42020kA10kA1.3kV
SPL240R / SPL440R40kA20kA1.5kV
SPL265(R) / SPL465(R)65kA35kA1.9kV
  • Imax is the largest surge the device is rated to divert, and In the nominal discharge current.
  • Up, the voltage protection level, is the voltage that gets through to your wiring during a surge. Lower is better, and here it rises with the rating: the 65kA models let through 1.9kV against 1.3kV for the 20kA ones. A bigger Imax isn’t better on every number. The brochure gives 1.5kV between neutral and earth for all of them, though the SPL465 page gives 1.9kV.
  • Earthing: the pages state TN-S and TT. Malaysian homes use TT.
  • Width: 36mm (2 modules) single-phase, 72mm (4 modules) three-phase. Continuous operating voltage (Uc) is 350V.
  • Backup protection: Hager’s brochure says separate backup protection must be used. The SPL pages give a maximum fuse rating (80A for the SPL240R and SPL440R), though the figures vary oddly across the range, from 40A for the SPL420 to 125A for the SPL220. ST’s example DB layouts feed the SPD through its own MCB or fuse, after the main switch and before the RCCBs.

Which Imax to choose, and whether a house needs Type 1+2 at all, follows from the lightning risk assessment under MS IEC 62305 that ST’s domestic wiring guideline requires, carried out by a consulting engineer or ST-registered electrical contractor. See the SPD category page and our earthing and surge guide.

Replacing a cartridge

When a cartridge’s window turns from green to red, replace that cartridge. You don’t need a whole new SPD. Hager’s brochure matches cartridges to bases:

SPDPhase cartridgeNeutral cartridge
SPL220(R), SPL420(R)SPL020SPL040N
SPL240(R), SPL440(R)SPL040SPL040N
SPL265(R), SPL465(R)SPL065 (obsolete)SPL065N

The brochure also says the phase and neutral cartridges are keyed, so one can’t go into the other’s slot. It also says SPL cartridges are not compatible with Hager’s older SPN range. With the SPL065 marked obsolete in Malaysia, a 65kA unit may be harder to service, so ask your supplier before choosing one. In the KakiRepair group, one owner whose three-phase SPD (another brand) had one module showing red asked whether they could fit another brand’s module or had to replace the whole set. Hager doesn’t publish cross-brand compatibility, and its cartridges don’t even fit its own older range, so plan on either the matching cartridge or a complete new unit.

Conflicts in Hager’s own data

A few Hager Malaysia pages contradict their own titles, so check against the title and the brochure:

  • The SPL420R (spare part) page’s specification table gives a Type 1+2 class and 12.5kA. Its title and datasheet say Type 2, In 10kA, Imax 20kA.
  • The datasheets for the SPL040N and SPL065 cartridges look swapped: the 40kA neutral cartridge’s sheet gives 65kA figures, and the 65kA phase cartridge’s sheet gives 40kA figures.
  • The 2022 brochure gives the SPL420 and SPL420R an In of 5kA, while the product pages and datasheets say 10kA, and it gives the SPL065N neutral cartridge an In of 20kA, where its page says 35kA.

The table above uses each page’s title and the brochure where they agree.

Prices in Malaysia

On 8 October 2026, the priced listings for complete SPL units we found on BigGo and Google were for the brochure models without a product page:

SellerListingPrice
Pentagon Electric Mart (Shopee and Lazada, Selangor)SPL240, 2P (1P+N) 40kARM312.00
Pentagon Electric MartSPL440, 4P (3P+N) 40kARM658.00
CPE Electrical Supplier (Shopee, Penang)SPL440RM658.00

The same Shopee store lists Schneider’s iPRD40 at RM305.00 for 1P+N (A9L40500) and RM500.00 for 3P+N (A9L40600). At 40kA in that store, the single-phase Hager and Schneider cost about the same, and the three-phase Hager costs about RM158 more. Maxguard’s MY2-40MAX 1P+N is listed mostly at RM140–RM175 elsewhere (see the Maxguard SPD page).

In those searches we didn’t find priced listings for the SPL240R, SPL440R or the 65kA models, so we couldn’t verify what they cost. Some Malaysian electrical shops (Bestlite in Cheras, for example) list Hager surge devices on their sites without codes or prices in search results. A listing shows what a seller advertises, not confirmed stock.

Codes sellers list that Hager Malaysia doesn’t have: “Hager SPA201 / SPA401 Monobloc” (RM560–RM931 on Shopee, and an SPA401 at RM792.10 at another Shopee store), “SPM240E 2 Pole Monobloc” and an “SP 040 D” cartridge. None of these is in Hager Malaysia’s product index, so they may be other markets’ products. One SPL020 cartridge listing at RM329.00 costs more than a whole SPL240 elsewhere, so cross-check it before buying.
