Mega Kabel PVC cable ("Mega wayar"): sizes, ST approvals, SIRIM licence and prices in Malaysia
“Mega” is the cable brand Malaysian homeowners hear most often. When electricians say “JKR cable” or “grade A”, Mega is usually the first name, and some homeowners even assume “SIRIM cable” means Mega. It’s the house-wiring cable of Mega Kabel Sdn Bhd of Ulu Tiram, Johor: single-core, PVC-insulated copper cable to MS 2112-3, 450/750V, drawn through conduit and trunking.

Approvals and certificates
Mega Kabel’s house wire has all three things Malaysians ask about: an ST approval, a SIRIM licence and a JKR listing.
- Energy Commission approval for each size. ST’s public listing shows MEGA KABEL single-core non-sheathed cable approved as 013172/25 (1.5mm²), 013168/25 (2.5mm²), 013170/25 (4mm²), 013166/25 (6mm²), 013167/25 (10mm²) and 013173/25 (16mm²), plus 25 and 35mm². The certificate Mega Kabel publishes, valid to 1 June 2027, lists the same eight numbers.
- SIRIM certification mark. SIRIM QAS licence PC000431 covers Mega Kabel’s “PVC-insulated cables (non-sheathed) for fixed wiring” to MS 2112-3, 1.5–630mm². Mega has held it since November 2012, and the copy on Mega Kabel’s certifications page is valid until 30 November 2026.
- JKR eMAL. Mega Kabel is one of the 22 makers on JKR’s approved list for PVC insulated cable for government projects.
ST also lists Mega’s sheathed (PVC/PVC) single-core and multi-core cables separately. Make sure the roll you buy is the single-insulated cable if that’s what was quoted.
What the data sheet says
Mega Kabel’s specification sheet for this cable gives:
- Construction: plain annealed copper with PVC insulation, rated 450/750V and 70°C at the conductor.
- Colours: red, yellow, blue, green, black or white, with other colours on request. For fixed wiring, ST’s code uses red, yellow or blue for live, black for neutral and green or green-yellow for earth.
- Insulation thickness: 0.7mm at 1.5mm², 0.8mm at 2.5–6mm² and 1.0mm at 10–16mm².
- Weight per 100m: about 2.1kg (1.5mm²), 3.3kg (2.5mm²), 4.9kg (4mm²), 6.9kg (6mm²) and 11.6kg (10mm²). That’s a useful check on a roll’s length and copper.
Mega’s current-rating sheet puts two single-core cables in conduit at 30°C at 17.5A (1.5mm²), 24A (2.5mm²), 32A (4mm²), 41A (6mm²) and 57A (10mm²). Heat and bunching reduce that. ST’s minimum sizes still apply: 2.5mm² for a 20A radial socket circuit, 4mm² for a 32A radial, and 4mm² minimum for a water heater (see the cable category page).
Mega’s sheet doesn’t list the strand make-up. Sellers quote 7/0.53mm for 1.5mm², 7/0.67mm for 2.5mm², 7/0.85mm for 4mm², 7/1.04mm for 6mm² and 7/1.35mm for 10mm², the same as Tonn Cable’s data sheet.
What Malaysian electricians say
In Malaysian wiring groups, Mega is the brand others are compared against. Electricians repeatedly correct homeowners who think “SIRIM” means Mega: Mega is a “JKR spec” brand, while plenty of cheaper brands also carry the SIRIM mark. One wireman’s tier list (Pendawai Elektrik, July 2025) put Mega in the top tier with Fajar and Tonn. Some describe Mega and other “JKR spec” cable as stiffer than budget brands, and one commenter said Cablelink’s 4mm² was only as thick as Mega’s 2.5mm². We haven’t measured either. These are impressions from group threads, not measurements, and ST’s sizes apply whichever brand you buy. Our SIRIM cable guide covers the wider discussion.
What it costs
Advertised prices for a roll vary a lot by channel (8 October 2026):
| Size | Marketplaces via BigGo: median (range, listings) | Wiremen’s group posts, 2025–2026 |
|---|---|---|
| 1.5mm² | RM145 (RM134–190 at most stores, 15) | RM75–107 |
| 2.5mm² | RM230 (RM220–259 at most stores, 9) | RM105–180 |
| 4mm² | RM395 (RM280–415, 14) | RM205 |
| 6mm² | RM553 (RM400–623, 12) | RM315 |
| 10mm² | RM929 (RM650–1,034, 9) | RM510 |
Most marketplace listings don’t state the roll length; those that do say 100m. A few outliers (one RM111 roll of 2.5mm², one RM330 listing for 1.5mm²) are left out of “most stores”. The group prices are offers and quotes in wiremen’s groups such as Pendawai Elektrik. The lowest come from surplus-stock sales, and the 4–10mm² figures from a single February 2026 post, so a homeowner buying one roll shouldn’t expect them. At one KL store that lists several brands, Mega 2.5mm² was RM241.40 against RM236.40 for Southern Cable and RM170.60 for Cablelink.
Where to buy
Mega Kabel sells through electrical wholesalers and shops. Its contact page gives the factory at 2 & 4, Jalan Mahir 5, Taman Perindustrian Cemerlang, 81800 Ulu Tiram, Johor, tel. +607-861 1999, [email protected].
- Shops and distributors. Teknopuri in Cheras advertises a direct account with Mega Kabel. Many electrical shops in our store directory show Mega Kabel on their signboards or brand lists, which tells you they carry the brand but not today’s stock.
- Marketplaces. On Shopee, stores listing 100m rolls in October 2026 included OTE Store (Melaka, 1.5mm² RM145.55) and Kenyik Hardware Official Store (Selangor, 1.5mm² RM145). KVE Electrical Supplies (Selangor, 2.5mm² RM229.82) and Edaran Eleknas (KL, 2.5mm² RM241.40) list rolls without stating the length. Several stores also sell Mega cut to length, from about RM1.50 a metre.
Check the printing on the roll for “MEGA KABEL”, the size and the ST-SIRIM mark, and make sure a “Mega” listing isn’t a mixed-brand listing: some titles name Mega alongside Southern or Tonn.
