Southern Cable PVC house-wiring cable: sizes, ST approvals and prices in Malaysia
Southern Cable is one of the big Malaysian cable makers, best known for power-utility cable, and it also makes ordinary house wire. Its single-core PVC-insulated copper cable (CU/PVC, 450/750V, IEC 60227-3 and MS 2112-3) is the one electricians mean when they name “Southern” among the JKR-grade brands, as in one thread’s “Mega, Multi, Southern”. The company is part of Southern Cable Group Berhad and is based in Kuala Ketil, Kedah.

Southern Cable's single-core PVC-insulated copper cable to IEC 60227-3 and MS 2112-3, 450/750V, for wiring in conduit and trunking. The table lists the house-wiring sizes with their Energy Commission approval numbers and the catalogue's insulation thickness.

Approvals
- Energy Commission approval for each size. ST’s public listing shows SOUTHERN CABLE single-core Class 2 non-sheathed cable approved as 023366/22 (1.5mm²), 023369/22 (2.5mm²), 023367/22 (4mm²), 023365/22 (6mm²), 023368/22 (10mm²) and 023371/22 (16mm²), plus 25 and 35mm². These were still listed on 8 October 2026. ST also lists Southern’s flexible-stranded (Class 5) single-core cable, its sheathed cables and its flexible cords separately.
- JKR eMAL. Southern Cable is on JKR’s approved list for PVC insulated cable.
- SIRIM. Southern Cable’s annual report says it makes its cables “through accredited methods such as SIRIM QAS International certification”, but the company doesn’t publish the licence on its website, so we can’t quote a licence number. Check the printing on the cable for the SIRIM mark.
What the catalogue says
Southern’s website lists “PVC Insulated Non-Sheathed Cable” under building and construction, but it has no product page or download for it. The data below comes from Southern Cable’s Low Voltage Cables catalogue, a 2021 edition hosted by a KL electrical shop. Confusingly, the catalogue titles this cable “single core — copper, PVC sheathed cable, CU/PVC”, but the code and standards are those of the ordinary single-insulated wire.

Conductors are circular up to 6mm² and compacted from 10mm². The catalogue lists black as the standard colour, with others on request. Marketplace listings show red, yellow, blue, green and black rolls. Its ampacity figures are for three-phase groups. A single-phase pair in conduit carries a little more, as on Mega Kabel’s table, but ST’s minimum sizes per circuit still apply (see the cable category page).
Aluminium listings: not house wire
Some marketplace stores list “Southern … PVC Aluminium Cable” in 6mm² and 10mm², sold in 200m coils, at prices that look like bargains next to copper (RM190–485 a coil in October 2026). ST’s domestic wiring guideline requires copper conductors for house wiring, so these aren’t a cheaper substitute for the copper cable on this page. Read the title and the printing on the cable.
What it costs
Advertised roll prices for the copper cable (BigGo Malaysia, 8 October 2026) spread widely. Most listings don’t state the roll length; those that do say 100m:
- 1.5mm²: median RM153, from RM80–91 at some stores (VSN Mart, Johor; Best Cool, Selangor; Le Zone Cooler, Kedah) up to RM175–200 at others (12 listings).
- 2.5mm²: median RM142, from RM115–142 (Wee Wee Shop and Best Cool, Selangor; VSN Mart) up to RM236–268 (7 listings).
- 4mm²: median RM301, from RM198 (Cap Manok, 100m) to RM425 (6 listings).
KL shop edaran.my lists Southern 1.5mm² at RM148.90 and 2.5mm² at RM240.70. On Shopee, the same business (Edaran Eleknas) priced Southern within a few ringgit of Mega Kabel at 2.5mm² (RM236.40 against RM241.40) and 6mm² (RM559.30 against RM560.80), though its 10mm² was RM87 cheaper. So the lower Southern prices online may reflect the store rather than the brand: most of the cheapest Southern sellers don’t list Mega to compare. In wiremen’s groups, a seller advertised Southern at “market price” RM87 (1.5mm²), RM139 (2.5mm²) and RM220 (4mm²) in June 2022, and a 4mm² roll was offered at RM160 in Nilai/Bangi in June 2025.

Electrical shops and cable distributors carry it. Teknopuri in Cheras advertises a direct account with Southern among more than ten cable makers.
