Schneider Easy9 RCCBs in Malaysia: reading the code, 10mA vs 30mA, and Type A

Easy9 is Schneider Electric’s modular range for residential and small commercial distribution boards, and the Easy9 RCCB is its residual-current breaker: the switch that trips when current leaks to earth, the job many people still call an “ELCB”. It doesn’t protect against overload or short circuits, so it always works alongside MCBs. Schneider Malaysia’s site lists 20 Easy9 RCCB references. They differ in four things — poles, current rating, sensitivity and residual type — and all four show up in the order code.

Reading the reference

Take EZ9R36240, a 2-pole 40A 30mA unit:

• EZ9R — Easy9 RCCB
• 3 — sensitivity and type: 1 is 10mA Type AC, 2 is 10mA Type A, 3 is 30mA, 5 is 100mA and 6 is 300mA (all Type AC)
• 6 — the same in every reference except EZ9R14225, which has 4
• 2 — poles: 2 is 2P for single-phase, 4 is 4P for three-phase
• 40 — rated current in amps: 25, 40 or 63

So EZ9R56463 is 4-pole 63A 100mA, and EZ9R66225 is 2-pole 25A 300mA. This is a pattern that holds across these 20 Malaysian references, not an official decoding. The “Type A” digit rests on a single model, so always confirm the full specification for the code you’re buying.

Two numbers on the front are easy to mix up. The amps (25, 40, 63A) are how much current the device can carry continuously. The milliamps (10, 30, 100, 300mA) are the leakage that makes it trip. A 63A 30mA unit isn’t better at protecting people than a 40A 30mA one; it’s sized for a bigger supply with the same sensitivity.

What Schneider lists

Schneider Malaysia lists every combination of 2P or 4P, 25, 40 or 63A, and 30, 100 or 300mA in Type AC: 18 references. At 10mA it lists two, both 2-pole 25A: EZ9R14225 (Type AC) and EZ9R26225 (Type A). EZ9R26225 is the only Type A Easy9 RCCB on Schneider’s Malaysian pages, and those pages don’t list a 4-pole 10mA version.

Schneider’s product descriptions give the core ratings. The conditional short-circuit rating (Inc) is 6kA for most references and 4.5kA for EZ9R14225; the description for EZ9R56425 doesn’t state it. That matters because the RCCB has to be able to withstand the fault current its upstream protection allows. All references have a 500A rated making and breaking capacity and operate at 230V AC (2P) or 400V AC (4P). The 2P units are 36mm wide (four 9mm modules) and the 4P units 72mm. The Type AC descriptions state compliance with IEC 61008-1. Schneider’s pages don’t say whether these RCCBs are voltage-dependent or voltage-independent; see the water heater guide for why some electricians ask.

Type A, Type AC and the 10mA pair

Type AC detects ordinary AC leakage. Type A also detects pulsating DC leakage, which appliances with electronic controls can produce. Malaysia’s Energy Commission encourages Type A where there’s a lot of electronic equipment but doesn’t require it in general.

10mA matters because Malaysian rules require protection of 10mA or less on water-heater circuits. Some electricians prefer a 2-pole 25A 10mA RCCB with a C20 MCB over an RCBO for heaters, which is exactly what EZ9R14225 or EZ9R26225 provides; one Malaysian seller markets EZ9R26225 for water heaters. Both are 25A devices, so the MCB in front of them shouldn’t be rated higher than 25A. Under the Energy Commission’s water-heater table that suits heaters up to about 4.46kW. A larger heater that needs 32A protection needs a higher-rated 10mA device, which Schneider Malaysia’s Easy9 RCCB pages don’t list; the 32A 10mA Easy9 RCBO EZ9D16632 is one option. If you need Type A at 30mA, for example on a board with a lot of electronics, Schneider Malaysia’s Easy9 pages don’t list one. Schneider’s Acti9 iID range does: A9R51240 is a 2P 40A 30mA Type A device, and the Acti9 iID page covers its 2P and 4P Type A variants.

Where to find them

None of these sellers publishes prices. All work on enquiry, so ask for the full code. Their lists show what they advertise, not what’s on the shelf today.

YK Electrical Supplies, an industrial supplies distributor, lists all 20 Easy9 RCCB references by code, including both 10mA versions, alongside Acti9 RCCBs and Easy9 RCBOs, with WhatsApp enquiry on each.

Plus Power Solution at 10 Jalan BP 5/3, Bandar Bukit Puchong, splits the range into 2-pole and 4-pole Type AC pages, each with six selectable references at 30, 100 and 300mA. It’s open Monday to Friday, 8:30am–5:30pm, on +603-5887 1755, and its store profile has the WhatsApp number and directions.

Chin Chun Hardware in Selangor lists the Type A EZ9R26225 on its own page and several other Easy9 RCCBs in its Schneider category. Its description misprints the code as “EZ9R362254” and quotes 240/400V, so go by EZ9R26225 in the page title and Schneider’s 230V rating.

If you need EZ9R26225 specifically, ask for that exact code rather than “Easy9 RCCB 10mA”, since the Type AC version EZ9R14225 shares its other main ratings.
